This antique John Bell pottery crock is an exceptional rare example of mid-19th century American stoneware, featuring the distinctive cobalt blue swag decoration and the impressed “JOHN BELL / 1” maker’s mark.
It solves the need for a historically significant decorative vessel that brings authenticity, craftsmanship, and Pennsylvania pottery heritage into a modern setting.
Made in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania between 1850 and 1880, this one-gallon cylindrical stoneware jar displays a tooled shoulder, squared rim, and hand-brushed cobalt swags around the upper body. The impressed stamp confirms production by the renowned Bell family of potters. The crock shows glaze and surface variations typical of early American stoneware, including in-the-firing contact marks and a recessed firing impression on the shoulder. A small, shallow underside rim chip is present, consistent with age and use. Sourced from a stoneware collector’s estate, this piece represents a highly collectible form with strong decorative presence.
