Without a maker's mark or documented provenance, we cannot attribute the arms to a particular family or estate, but they give the cooler the wonderful old-world character associated with elaborate 19th-century tableware.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe details continue around the entire piece. A deeply raised border of roses, leaves, berries, and scrolling foliage surrounds the opening, while sculptural side handles and four ornate feet give the large vessel an elegant profile. Comparable English silverplate wine coolers from the Victorian period were often produced as substantial table pieces, combining functional forms with the elaborate ornament and armorial decoration fashionable during the period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWe especially love the surface exactly as we found it. Rather than polishing away its history, we left the silverplate untouched. Fill it loosely with olive branches, seasonal greenery, or flowers, as we have styled it, or leave it empty on a dining table, bar, kitchen island, or console.
