Antique Wire Egg Basket | Large Rustic Produce Basket with Handle is one of those old utilitarian pieces that brings instant texture and character to a kitchen. Made entirely of metal wire, the deep gathering basket has an open radial construction, wide upper rim, and tall movable handle for carrying. We love the naturally aged brown surface and sculptural shape. Fill it with eggs, garden produce, linens, or seasonal fruit, or leave it empty where the old wirework can be appreciated.
Our favorite detail is the construction. The closely spaced wires radiate outward from the center of the base before turning upward to create the deep, slightly flared sides. It is beautifully simple and wonderfully graphic, especially viewed from above. The old brown oxidation has been left exactly as found, giving the basket the honest patina we look for in antique working pieces.
Originally, baskets of this general type were used around farms for gathering and carrying eggs and produce. Today, we would put this one right back to work. Line it with an old grain sack or linen for bread, fill it with apples or vegetables on a kitchen island, or use it for towels and textiles. It has enough character to be decorative but still feels completely useful.
