This vintage lucite cake stand dates to the 1960s and is attributed to Dorothy Thorpe. Thorpe is particularly associated with glamorous midcentury entertaining pieces that combined clean modernist forms with materials such as glass and acrylic. While there is no visible maker's mark, its sculptural Lucite construction and spiral form are consistent with pieces attributed to her work.
It's the spiral base that really makes this piece special. The thick, clear Lucite curves into one beautiful continuous loop beneath the top, almost making the cake stand appear to float above the table. It's such a simple design, but incredibly striking, especially when the light catches the Lucite.
