Antique French Wicker Demijohn | Large Early 1900s Wine Bottle

Antique French Demijohn | Large Wicker Covered Bottle is the kind of piece that brings instant history and texture to a room. Sourced in France, this early 1900s glass demijohn still wears its original woven wicker covering, giving it that wonderfully relaxed French farmhouse look we love. Its larger scale makes it especially good on the floor, a console, or tucked into a collected corner of the home.

Perfect For:

  • Adding height and texture beside a console or cabinet
  • Displaying on the floor with other oversized vessels
  • Styling with dried branches or simply leaving empty
  • Bringing authentic French farmhouse character into a room

Style It With:
Pair this antique French demijohn with pieces from our Vintage Vases, Vessels & Antique Pots collection and mix it with finds from our French Vintage Decor collection for a layered, collected look.

This antique French demijohn dates to the early-mid 1900s and was originally used for storing and transporting wine or other liquids. Large glass bottles like this were practical working pieces, and the woven wicker covering helped protect the glass while making the vessel easier to handle.

For us, the wicker is what makes this one especially good. It has softened and aged over time, with all the irregularities and wear you would hope to see on an authentic old French bottle. Paired with the thick glass underneath, it gives the demijohn so much texture without feeling heavy or overdone.

At 17.5 inches tall, it has enough scale to stand beautifully on its own. We would use it on the floor beside a cabinet, tucked under a console, or grouped with old pottery and other large vessels. Add a few dried branches if you want more height, or leave it empty and let the shape and wicker do all the work.

It's one of those pieces that works in more styles than you might expect. French farmhouse is the obvious fit, but we also love old demijohns in more modern rooms where the aged wicker and glass add just the right amount of warmth and history.
