This vintage Michelangelo book, The Complete Works of Michelangelo, dates to the 1960s. Copyrighted in Italy and printed in Japan, it's a substantial art volume devoted to the work of one of history's most important Renaissance masters. At nearly 15 inches long and 2.5 inches thick, this isn't a book that disappears into a bookshelf. It has real presence.
For us, the linen cover is a big part of the appeal. This copy no longer has its dust jacket, and we actually prefer it that way. We love seeing the texture of the linen and the gold script exposed rather than hiding such a beautiful hardcover beneath a paper jacket. It feels softer, older, and much more interesting sitting out in a room.
And this is definitely a book we would leave out. Stack it on a coffee table with another large art book, use it as a riser beneath a favorite piece of pottery or an old silver bowl, or simply let it sit on its own where someone can pick it up and look through it. We love decorating with books that are actually worth opening, and this one certainly is.
We've slowly collected books on the masters in this oversized format whenever we find them. Mixed together, the linen bindings, gilt lettering, and substantial scale make such a beautiful stack, while each book brings something worth discovering inside. They're decorative, yes, but they're still books first, which is what makes them so much better than something chosen only for its cover.
