Vintage Molcajete | Authentic Basalt Stone Bowl Mortar is one of those old kitchen pieces we love just as much for its sculptural form as its original purpose. Hand worked from natural stone in Mexico, this early to mid 1900s molcajete has a wonderfully rough, deeply textured surface and classic three-footed shape. We would leave it right on the kitchen counter filled with fresh avocados or limes, or simply display it for its beautifully primitive character.
What we especially love about this one is the texture. Every surface shows the irregular character of the stone and the way it was worked, giving it so much more presence than a newly made kitchen accessory. The dark, earthy coloring looks especially good mixed with old wood, pottery, copper, and other natural materials.
